31 5.25 Structured notes Structured notes are debentures which a subsidiary offered to customers, who are institutional investors or high net worth investors. The notes are issued under conditions approved by the Office of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), and the underlying assets are securities listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. The notes are recorded at amortised cost, adjusted by the discount on the notes. The discount is amortised by the effective rate method with the amortised amount presented as interest expenses in profit or loss. Embedded derivatives are recorded as derivative assets at fair value and the changes in fair value are recorded in profit or loss. In determining the fair value, the subsidiary uses a valuation technique and theoretical model. The input to the model is derived from observable market conditions that include liquidity, dividend, interest rate, and the price and the volatility of the underlying asset. 5.26 Employee benefits Short-term employee benefits The Company and its subsidiaries recognised short-term employee benefits, such as salary, wages, bonuses, contributions to the social security fund, and vacation, as expenses when incurred. Post-employment benefits (Defined contribution plans) The Company, its subsidiaries and its employees have jointly established a provident fund. The fund is monthly contributed by employees and by the Company and its subsidiaries. The fund’s assets are held in a separate trust fund, and the Company and its subsidiaries’ contributions are recognised as expenses when incurred. Post-employment benefits (Defined benefit plans) The Company and its subsidiaries have obligations in respect of the severance payments it must make to employees upon retirement under labor law. The Company and its subsidiaries treat these severance payment obligations as a defined benefit plan. The obligation under the defined benefit plan is determined by a professionally qualified independent actuary, using the projected unit credit method. Actuarial gain and loss arising from post-employment benefits are recognised immediately in other comprehensive income.
